Kreuser
Gallery is proud to present 100 Potions for Puerto Rico by Jasmine Dillavou.
The opening reception is First Friday on October 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. and the
exhibit runs through October 25. Enjoy a talk with Jasmine on Thursday, October
11 at 5:30 p.m.
One year
ago, Hurricane Maria swept across Puerto Rico leaving the already struggling
commonwealth in full destruction. The entire country feared for families and
friends left on the island. Jasmine quickly felt as though there was nothing
she could do as FEMA and the Trump administration fell short of anything
helpful. Bodies piled up. News came in fragmented facts. There was lots of
conversation about the U.S responsibility to act but rarely discussion of the
boiling political resistance or the government-debt crisis post Maria.
100 Potions
for Puerto Rico has been Jasmine’s answer to the disaster. The one thing she
knows well is art and the healing magic that exists within it. These potions
consist of stories about the lost history of Puerto Rico, stories about
Jasmine’s family and friends. They hold healing spells and newspaper clippings.
They hold personal magical incantations and Santeria voodoo.
Together,
the community can conjure the ghosts of Puerto Rico’s history and can keep
these stories alive. This community can piece together this fragmented disaster
and remember that we owe alot to this island. Jasmine owes a lot to “mi
familia y mi ancestoras.”
With a
donation of $50 or more, you will receive a magical potion. These donations will
go directly in support of Hurricane Relief through Tainas Sunidos.
