PR ARTNEWS - An Intricate Stew Of Truths And Mirages is the
second in a series of exhibitions with the artists Hector Arce-Espasas, Mark Cannariato, Susumu Kamijo, Hector Madera
and Daria Marchik that take notions of magic realism as their starting points,
the show is inspired by a line from Gabriel Garcia-Márquez’s seminal novel, One
Hundred Years of Solitude. The works on display reflect on the tensions
explored in the book as it approaches its 50th year of publication – between
the dead and the living, the culturally historical and the fantastical, the
primeval and the current – in riotous, highly contemporary artistic voices.
Puerto Rican artist Hector Arce-Espasas’s work interrogates
Caribbean cultural identity, evolving notions of the ‘exotic’, and issues of
colonialism and post-colonialism. Jean clad bottoms, decorative pineapples and
totems of tropical fruit are all exuberantly exploited in his diverse practice
– exemplified here in high-sheen ceramic sculptures and unabashedly vibrant
paintings.

Hector Madera’s practice combines deep, considered
reworkings of art historical and imagery with a bold and distinctively
experimental use of materials. The Puerto Rican artist’s intensely tactile
sculptures – here, he shows a new series made from tape-covered balloons – and
wall pieces are distinguished by a cacophonous, frantically colorful aesthetic
that loudly invites us in to play.

“It was as if God had decided to put to the test every
capacity for surprise and was keeping the inhabitants of Macondo in a permanent
alternation between excitement and disappointment, doubt and revelation, to
such an extreme that no one knew for certain where the limits of reality lay.
It was an intricate stew of truths and mirages that convulsed the ghost of José
Arcadio Buendía with impatience and made him wander all through the house even
in broad daylight.” – from One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia
Marquez.
