Puerto Rican artist Nora Maité Nieves in the Residency Exchange at Unisex Salon, New York

NEW YORK - Unisex Salon is pleased to announce Residency Exchange, an invitation for artists to produce temporal window displays between exhibitions. Projects include new work that excites the artist the most. In exchange, the artist assists the Salon during upcoming exhibitions.

We welcome Nora Maité Nieves to be the first artist for this exchange. Nieves will display paintings, amulets, heirlooms, and jewelry, revealing their intertwining relationships and sense of belonging. Nieves places her interdisciplinary practice in the expanding dialogue of painting. Her work makes references to the memory of places: specifically the domestic space. She recreates ornamental details from architecture, floor surfaces, tiles, concrete decorative blocks, and floor plans she interacts with and experiences, exploring how we define space through domestic ownership.

Nora Maité Nieves (b. San Juan, Puerto Rico) lives and works in New York. She received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her BFA from La Escuela de Artes Plásticas, in San Juan. Recent exhibitions include Material at The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, and Terrain Biennial in Chicago, and Where The Heart Is at Fresh Window Gallery in Brooklyn. Residencies include ÁREA: Lugar de Proyectos en Caguas in Puerto Rico, High Concept Laboratories in Chicago, and Summer Artist Residency Program in Painting and Drawing at The Cooper Union School of Art and Science in New York.
